I am glad you are opposing it… but it’s too late. I will be moving my domains off the service after Christmas is done with.

  • by FDB on December 23rd, 2011

I believe that you have made the right choice here and I am pleased to be a GD customer. The strength, indeed the tranformational power, of the Internet has always been in the unfettered nature of its communications. Yes, intellectual property issues need to be addressed. These can be done in ways that do not include censorship, ever the expedient of powerful interests. Thank you.

  • by G00F on December 23rd, 2011

make a stand against it otherwise more domains will move away from your service.

  • by ricardogce on December 23rd, 2011

What does “no longer supporting” mean? Merely withdrawing from public endorsements is hardly enough. A rejection of the bill would have been a proper response. Black-holing a press release means nothing.

  • by yarders on December 23rd, 2011

I’m delighted you’ve changed your position although your initial support for SOPA was very disappointing. However because you have listened to your customers concerns I will continue use GoDaddy for hosting and domain registration. Thanks

  • by webeida on December 23rd, 2011

How am I to trust a business that can change it’s mind so quickly on legislation that most internet users take very seriously and find extremely damaging to free speech? I’m not American and therefore this legislation does not impact me directly but as I no longer trust you as a business, I’ll be moving my domains, hosting and other services to other providers over time, starting this month.

  • by leaving on December 23rd, 2011

Your statement says you helped work on it for 3 years. You had notice of the problems but supported the bill as a whole.

    Gotta leave.

  • by jvenator on December 23rd, 2011

I’m taking an opportunity to let you (GoDaddy) know that I am disappointed in your support for the SOPA legislation. While your new CEO recently said the company would be “taking a step back,” it falls well short of my expectations of what GoDaddy should be doing as a major participant and influencer of the web and how it functions.

It is not enough to simply move from a position of support, to one of silence. It is imperative that GoDaddy clearly and definitively comes out against such an ill-conceived piece of legislation. Hopefully GoDaddy will do what’s right for the health of the web and the end-users, and I can continue to support you with my dollars.

However, if GoDaddy does not publicly drop support for SOPA I will be transferring all 27 of my domains elsewhere, and will also not be using GoDaddy for any future registrations either.

The legislation may have been initially inspired by real and legitimate issues, but no right minded person with even a modest understanding of how the web functions can think that SOPA is the right way to address things.

I hope your leadership will make the right decision.

    Regards,
    J

I have to admit that I’m moving mine as well asap. Not only for this but also for GoDaddy’s policy of ignoring spam complaints. It’s one thing to make a stand and announce that “We’re tough on spammers” but when multiple reports for the same domains get ignored over and over again and your company is even hosting them on your own servers, it pretty much shows that your antispam policy is nothing but a joke.

  • by pldube on December 23rd, 2011

too late … moving all my domains in progress. Too bad GoDaddy own NoDaddy.com

  • by LibertySpirit on December 23rd, 2011

It is discomforting that Go Daddy would concider taking the side of the Hollywoog moguls over its own customers. They have shown us what the think of us and bitten the hand that that feeds them. Itsd much to late for this meek withdrawell of their support. I will be pulling my sites as soon as I can. Their behavior in this mater is unsupportable.

  • by Light_bulb on December 23rd, 2011

Good for making the change. I was planning on leaving this weekend and now I don’t need to.

  • by Charlie2 on December 23rd, 2011

    Thank you!

SOPA was terrible (some might say fascist) piece of legislation.

I am reminded of the hippocratic oath; “I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment, and never do harm to anyone.”

I am no longer concerned that I am a GoDaddy customer.

  • by RadCap on December 23rd, 2011

I am quite happy with your decision. And it has prevented me from moving my domains from your service. Thank you.

  • by Chris_Kitze on December 23rd, 2011

Good move, Bob. We would have had to leave your service. SOPA is an unconstitutional and immoral bill that will only lead to censorship. I’m hoping it doesn’t pass, because we will consider moving all our sites offshore.

  • by Mike_Daddy on December 23rd, 2011

glad that godaddy is choosing to cease support but I would like to know why they supported SOPA in the first place. What do they have to gain? All ISP’s and and hosts should be against this. It will be the end of the internet. Give an inch take a mile. I wish congress would actually listen to the people, why do they get to decide!!!

  • by jorgei on December 23rd, 2011

Excellent choice if I may say so…

  • by devnill on December 24th, 2011

Too little, too late. I’ve always recommended godaddy to friends, but I can’t support a company that doesn’t support my personal freedoms.

  • by ACVT on December 24th, 2011

They aren’t opposing it – they just aren’t “supporting” it – big difference. That is to say, no difference from their original position. I’m pulling my account as well unless they state they oppose SOPA.

  • by mbrusl on December 24th, 2011

I think the SOPA idea is a great idea, however the language behind it has something to be desired if kept in its current form. Before any domain gets the plug pulled, it should be investigated and verified. Then give the domain owner the opportunity to clean up any problems that maybe caused. Also if this is caused by hackers and can be proven, then the domain owner should be given the opportunity to get it cleaned up and secured once notified. This bill should be written in plain English, without the complicated legal jargon, so that everyone can understand it better.

So for those that are just itching to jump ship because GoDaddy is trying to fight for the protection of its users, you should wait until the bill actually comes out. The reason I say this is because if congress writes and passes this bill as is, the public will crucify the law makers.

So GoDaddy, do what you have been doing since you’ve opened your doors, by protecting your customers, as long as the customer is given the opportunity to fix and resolve the problems when notified.

  • by j3r3my on December 24th, 2011

Unfortunately I will be moving away the current 30 domains I have with you and will not be moving the 150 additional domains I was planning to fully migrate to daddy (due to privacy pricing bundles I had planned a full migration). I will fully discontinue everything on 29th December 2011 with the reddit community.
The reversal is not enough, the damage has already been made by the full participation by godaddy in drafting the legislation for years and the testimony in congress.

  • by CoreyVA on December 24th, 2011

    It’s too little too late.

  • by kird03 on December 24th, 2011

I removed my domains today! You have choosen to support this objectionable SOPA law.

Damage control by telling you no longer support this, is not credible anymore. You might have visibly stopped your support, but who tells us you no longer support this on the background.

GoDaddy has been a fellow developper of this legalisation. You can never be trusworthy anymore. Not now, not in the future.

Now you have to take the consequenses of your decision! Whish you all the best. I’m gone!

  • by ak4mc on December 24th, 2011

I only have three non-revenue domains registered with GoDaddy, so moving them would have been more trouble for me than it would have been for GD.

I’m therefore grateful to the high-volume clients whose anger over this issue helped move GD management to reconsider and cross over to the right side.

  • by dewd on December 24th, 2011

Where is the original blog post on your support of SOPA. I need to see just how hypocritical you are before I move my 3 domains away from GoDaddy.

Why did you change you mind? My understanding is your original blog was in support of SOPA and was very strongly worded. If you believed in something so much then why would the threat of lost business sway you? Either you believe in something or you don’t.

I believe I’ve had enough of GoDaddy and if I don’t see the original post I will be moving.

  • by Wonko on December 24th, 2011

I don’t think that you understand. You have gone to far down the road to solve this with mere neutrality. To truly regain trust you MUST take an active roll in opposition to SOPA. It is bad legislation. It is un-American. It is against everything the Internet is and should be.

Oppose it with more vigor than you supported it or you may as well do nothing.

My frustrations with netsol’s customer service pale in comparison to my unwillingness to support your company so long as you maintain your current position.

  • by TAFB on December 24th, 2011

Good job GoDaddy! Sucks it took so long to convince you :( Please do everything you can to stand against SOPA, just saying you don’t support it is not enough!

  • by LuDaCrIs on December 24th, 2011

You need to be more proactive against the legislation if you’re going to flip now. One blog post and a PR move isn’t enough. Tell us what else you’re going to do.

  • by tscibilia on December 24th, 2011

great news. but it’s too late ive transferred all my domains away from godaddy. im glad your customers have opened your eyes.

  • by ChrisQ on December 24th, 2011

Good decide. not too late I think.

  • by bonoes on December 24th, 2011

You guys helped create the bill. I know you’re not done with SOPA. As soon as domainbyproxy responds to me I’m leaving.

  • by Sean_Corfield on December 24th, 2011

“not supporting” is not the same as “opposing” – in my mind you haven’t gone far enough on this issue. I’m already looking for registrars that are openly opposed to SOPA…

  • by AgentofChange on December 24th, 2011

Like G00F said, you need to take an OPPOSING stance, not a neutral stance.
If that does not change, my domains (however few) will also be out and move to those registrars who oppose it.

Others reading this, please comment, things don’t change themselves, they have to be changed.

  • by ketter on December 25th, 2011

    Travis, FDB,
I don\’t believe that Godaddy has changed it stance, as in that it now condones the SOPA bill. Godaddy still hasn\’t revoked it\’s congressional support. Opposing is a whole different stance they are not willing to make.
    Not a lot changed.

  • by Mundane on December 25th, 2011

It’s a great thing that GoDaddy has taken this decision to wipe out it’s name from the SOPA’s supporters list. But yes, I no longer can put my trust on GoDaddy, cause there’s 0 % assurance that GoDaddy will not support SOPA, PIPA in the near future and also would not like to play against SOPA, PIPA.

Sorry, but domains will be transferred away from GoDaddy, atleast i’m doing it. Good bye forever!

  • by WoodburyMan on December 25th, 2011

Too late. Good think I transferred my domains a bit over a month ago already due to lower prices. Supporting this bill from the get go was wrong. Retracting your support from it now was a good effort, but the damage has already been done. Likewise GoDaddy is still supporting the Senate version of SOPA, Protect-IP. So in reality their understanding of it hasn’t changed, just that they don’t want to lose thousands of customers over it.

  • by billca42 on December 25th, 2011

Yes, you need to actually oppose SOPA to gain any credibility with your customers. Otherwise, it will appear that you simply dropped the support of SOPA for purely financial reasons. You need to understand your customers’ point of view in order to serve them, or else they will go to your competitors.

  • by Geep on December 25th, 2011

Not supporting SOPA is not the same as a statement of non support. Although it is a small step in the right direction, it is not enough. This proposed bill needs strong leadership from strong players in the industry, like GoDaddy. Come on, step forward and take a stance against SOPA. The only other choice is for us to vote with our dollars and move elsewhere.

  • by Carl_M_Gregory on December 26th, 2011

But.. it’s too late – your true colors have already been shown.

  • by livingrescues on December 26th, 2011

How could you have supported it in the first place?? I hope everyone stays ANTI-SOPA.. or anything close to that.. keep the internet open and free!

  • by KKrng on December 26th, 2011

It’s just not enough to change your mind now…

  • by WTFGD on December 26th, 2011

Just got up to speed today after reading all the negative press. I didn’t expect this from GoDaddy and I will remember.

  • by DreamsYouGot on December 26th, 2011

You’re done good. I was thinking that is time to move away.
The main essence of internet is its utter freedom, or it will die.

  • by dhashd on December 26th, 2011

Waiting for December 29th. It’s time to move my 16 domains.

  • by Stove on December 27th, 2011

Make a stand against SOPA now or I am pulling all of my domains several hundred as well as several dedicated servers and will be encouraging many others to do the same.

  • by lulz on December 27th, 2011

What has godaddy done to oppose SOPA?

Unless something is done, it is just empty rhetoric.

  • by phideck on December 27th, 2011

Not supporting and opposing are two vastly different positions.

  • by Gordon Bland on December 27th, 2011

I’m glad that you’re no longer supporting it. I was going to transfer my domains away but now I don’t have too. Thank you for listening and acting on public opinion.

  • by RAWRfdsafsaf on December 27th, 2011

Until you oppose SOPA we will continue to transfer domains away from GoDaddy.

  • by pickensj on December 27th, 2011

Make a REAL public statement, loud enough congress hears it.

Most of us in the open source community are waiting till December 29 to see your next move.

    Have you forgotten your roots?

Most of us have been around a while and have long memories.

    This should never have happened!

  • by What_is_this on December 28th, 2011

    Its too late.

In few days you will be loosing me and other.

  • by OmarArmas on December 29th, 2011

Unless you make specific actions to show you are against(not just a memo), I will move my domains away and encourge all my friends to do so.

I don´t think a position like that change from one day to another just like that.

    Omar

  • by davidalvarez on December 29th, 2011

Sounds like you changed your support because you do not want to lose customers, not because you have changed your position on the subject. I have canceled my account and moving to a company that puts customers first, and telling everyone I know to do the same!

  • by DomainHorder on December 29th, 2011

Backtracking once you realised how much business you were losing doesn’t fill me with confidence. I’m moving my domains elsewhere.

  • by IdleByte on January 4th, 2012

Already started purchasing domains through another company, moving sites and domains as soon as terms are up. Been with Godaddy for years now. Migrating is going to be a royal pain.

But one step back on Godaddy’s part does not line them up for a single step forward. Take a few MORE steps back, re-evaluate whether a neutral stance is acceptable after the beating we (will) received with GoDaddy’s hand guiding the houses that make up our government, then release another statement. $25+ a month now diverted somewhere else. I pay monthly, not in packages, so I pay more than the average GD customer, WAS doing so happily.

  • by shayneb on January 11th, 2012

Sorry, but you only backed away from your stance because it was affecting your bottom line. That doesn’t change the fact that you fully supported this legislation. For that reason I am permanently severing all ties with Godaddy and moving to a registrar/host who fully opposed this legislation from the start. I have zero tolerance for any legislation or supporters of legislation that threatens to censor the internet, and I state that as someone who’s intellectual property is currently on the internet.

  • by pbmyers on January 22nd, 2012

I have been a Go Daddy customer since ’08. I will be changing my domain names over to a company that is OPPOSED to SOPA or any similar ridiculous piece of legislation when my domains are up for renewal. I have already purchased additional domain names elsewhere. Not supporting SOPA is simply not enough!

  • by PsyShaman on January 25th, 2012

I am the Godady customer since 2009 and I have recommended the Godady services to many peoples but I will transfer all my domain and website ( about 100 domains and 20 websites) to another provider soon.
As the other people said : Not supporting SOPA is simply not enough!
