Statement about SOPA

Date Submitted: 12-29-2011 by GoDaddy Expert  Go Daddy

Not what you're looking for?
We want your feedback!

Go Daddy opposes SOPA because the legislation has not fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities. Our company regrets the loss of any of our customers, who remain our highest priority, and we hope to repair those relationships and win back their business over time.

I was so close to not hosting my new domain here on Godaddy, but after the new statements were released about your opposition to the ridiculous SOPA bill, I will be more than happy to bring my business here.

  • by Thinkingman on December 29th, 2011

Mahalo for this comment. Transparency should be a two-way street, not a one-way mirror.

  • by Harish_Rao on December 29th, 2011

Oh please. You issued a statement saying you were for SOPA and had your name on the Judiciary Committee’s SOPA supporter list. It’s only after you lost me plus a few thousand other customers that you reversed yourselves. Shame on you guys for supporting something so anti Free-Speech on the face of it to begin with. Goodbye Go Daddy and Good Riddance.

  • by Desert_Tarantu on December 29th, 2011

Just opposing SOPA is not enough. What about the other bill, PIPA-Protect IP Act? It virtually contains the same language as SOPA. If GoDaddy does not publicly oppose BOTH of these bills, consider my business gone. I will move my domain from your system and never do business with GoDaddy again. Period. Do the right thing and oppose both of these bills. The internet depends on it.

  • by lance_pettis on December 29th, 2011

    what about pipa ?

  • by Nomadic on December 29th, 2011

Is that all you got? No explanation for your lobbying to get an exemption inside the bill?

  • by TomB22 on December 29th, 2011

I’m leaving your company. It shouldn’t be “not fulfilled” it should have been “Godaddy opposes SOPA in any shape or form!!! “. Looking for other registrars that are pro free web as we know it.

  • by rsharrer on December 29th, 2011

Too little Too Late, I would like to see GD work toward defeating this bill! what could you guys have possibly have been thinking to support this. I have a resellers account, with over 200 domains, guess I will have to start looking for some else that shares my thoughts and goals.

  • by EkriirkE on December 29th, 2011

    Too little, too late.

  • by jwaterwo on December 29th, 2011

    HA!

  • by gdtempspork on December 29th, 2011

since you did change your stance, i’ll keep my other accounts with godaddy, but i feel like i have to move at least one to make it clear how opposed i am to this legislation that godaddy supported until they realized it’ll lose them business.

supporting a bill to stop piracy is fine. supporting a bill to censor and restrict data is NOT fine. if you want to stop or discourage piracy, find another way.

  • by mattcvf on December 30th, 2011

Really? This is godaddy’s response “the legislation has not fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities” … thank you for another reason fortifying my decision.

  • by jimsing59 on December 30th, 2011

Thank you, I really didn’t want to leave GoDaddy.

  • by dazzlepod on December 30th, 2011

Oh my, these 2 sentences made news? And you expect people to come back by posting this? It has been unprofessional how the company has been trying to position itself. It gets worse with this statement.

  • by thefactremains on December 30th, 2011

It is the right position to stand in, and the important thing is that you are standing firmly there now.

  • by rexM on December 30th, 2011

I will tell Go Daddy, if SOPA and PIPA are even tacetly approved of by Godaddy Management, I will cancel all my domain, and hosting product and migrate to another company..

I have been a customer for some time, and remain happy with the performance, however, any movement toward blocking content, or contributing to the statists movement of 1st amendment control, is fully unacceptable.

This letter is to inform GoDaddy, they need to make it clear SOPA/PIPA is unacceptable in ANY form. I will take my business elsewhere, if this encroachment is not fought tooth and nail, by all internet firms I support.

Though I appreciate the neutralized stance, (and now opposition), I believe that this is only a response out of lost revenues due to the massive number of domains transferred. I believe that businesses should understand the implications of taking a political stance not in line with my own. As such, I am in the process of transferring all my domains and virtual hosting away from GoDaddy.

    -I have appreciated your business.

Well this decision may surely help godaddy to survive in the field now :P

  • by TheNott on December 31st, 2011

I am glad to hear that Go Daddy is opposing this legislation. I have enjoyed and appreciated Go Daddy service over the past year and I am glad that I now don’t have to give it up over such a crummy bill.

    Thanks,
    The Nott

Too bad GoDaddy took such a stand feverishly with SOPA at first, and that is why I am transferring only my account for now. Remains to be seen if they really understand their customers. Maybe I will come back but… we will wait and see… I also manage many other domains for other people here at GoDaddy. For now I am transferring only my accounts. Godaddy..weakly recanting after such a feverish pro-SOPA stand is not good enough.

  • by codephined on January 1st, 2012

Thank you for switching sides and opposing the internet-ending legislation. I am very happy that I did not have to cancel my account over your previous support for SOPA.

  • by JacquiH on January 2nd, 2012

Please continue to oppose this. It’s the right thing to do.

  • by heavyhitter on January 3rd, 2012

So, Im curious to know who you all are going to get your hosting from. Just because GoDaddy made a stance and changed it doesn’t mean you should go somewhere else that hasn’t even proclaimed their intentions. What a fickle unhappy bunch of people you all are.

  • by Mkaioh2 on January 3rd, 2012

    ouff!! -o-!! TY GODADDY I LOVE U!!♥♥♥

  • by Victor_Illesca on January 5th, 2012

So glad found this article, I was about to move all my domains and hosting somewhere else

  • by Skhilled on January 8th, 2012

I’ve hosted my domain names here for many years (as well as referred many clients to GoDaddy over the years) and am saddened that GoDaddy would actually consider supporting the SOPA originally. Flip-flopping because you lose customers but is not how you really feel just makes things look even worse. Sticking to your guns would make people respect you more…one way or the other.

I’ve been surfing the net for over 22 years. Yes, there are things that need to be changed such as copyright infringement of software and music across many sites all over the world. But this is not the way to achieve it.

I will be moving my domains and making sure that all of my friends on the net, the many people I’ve helped start websites, and future friends do not support such businesses as this one.

  • by Skhilled on January 8th, 2012

To further my last statements, GoDaddy needs to do all they can to actively help stop it!

  • by JustWords on January 10th, 2012

Your one paragraph statement is a step in the right direction, but actions speak louder than words.

    Please try and stop this!

With great power comes great responsibility, you should fully understand the damage these bills can do to the greatest innovation the world has ever seen!

  • by ceeRay on January 12th, 2012

I’m glad I wont need to transfer my account. Though I do hope that you are also opposed to PIPA. If you are not… well I’m sure we will be seeing more customers migrating.

TBH, I was shocked when I found out GD was in support of such bills to begin with. What did you honestly think would happen with your customers?

Do you really think this Bill will do the Net and everyone good?? There are other ways to stop bootleggers, imposing laws that remove our Freedom of Speech is not one of them.

    Please fight the good fight.

I host over 60+ websites and control more than a hundred domain names at godaddy.

I am sickened with the thought that godaddy had been working behind the scenes to help craft this junk legislation.

If they can flip flop this way, they can flip flop the other way. I’m ready to move all my business at the drop of a hat should they support SOPA or PIPA.

  • by AntiSopa on January 15th, 2012

Sorry GoDaddy, you guys were active supporters until it started costing you money.. and now you decide to change your stance. I do not believe this is genuine, I will transfer the remainder of my hosting & domains to another service. today.

  • by S73 on January 18th, 2012

Just finished transferring my domain to another host. Just one customer, and one domain, but the fact that you could have supported this at any point in time is unacceptable.
