Security is a priority for Go Daddy, and nobody knows that more than the folks in our IT Security team. Recently, Go Daddy was recognized as having the “Best Security Team” at SC Magazine’s 14th annual awards event. I can vouch – They’re an awesome group of people who do an excellent job keeping the Internet safe.
On an average day, Go Daddy has about 5.2 billion DNS queries and 286 billion inbound packets. It takes a team of skilled individuals, top-of-industry technologies, our own proprietary creations, and a lot of coffee to keep ahead of the nearly 7 billion security logs created or accessed every day.
From DDoS attempts to incident triage and investigation, everything in this industry moves lightning-fast. Our well-versed team creates a lot of homegrown code to cut down on repetitive manual actions, and they balance that with the right commercial tools to keep the team nimble and quick to act.
To mitigate incidents, they’ve leveraged a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution that provides a continuously updated picture of what’s happening in our environments. The system is able to automatically act on high confidence issues, which gives the team more time to focus on developing new technologies that will help keep us ahead of the bad guys.
It’s not all about crime fighting or data analyzing, though. Sometimes they’re just really, really busy and they handle an enormous amount of traffic. Most recently, Go Daddy had a 1.4 Gbps spike in legitimate traffic after our commercials aired during the Super Bowl. If you don’t count the Steelers vs. Packers rivalry, it was actually a pretty uneventful day for the team.
