Nameservers set for new GoDaddy hosting account not working?
emb said 1 year, 4 months ago:
I want all my domain names pointed to my new website hosted here. One is not registered here. I thought setting the nameservers on the other registrar was all I needed to do?
It’s not working: it can’t find the server. I’ve repeatedly confirmed the nameservers are correctly pointing to my new hosted website here.
Here’s my confusion: I’ve been told I need to update my DNS records here, but I don’t want to CHANGE the domain name currently on this hosting account. I can’t untangle all the jargon to be sure I’m not breaking my current/new domain name DNS settings?
Can somebody clarify the steps for me? I don’t want to have BOTH domain names not working simultaneously.
Thanks.

@emb
Keep in mind that changes to your domain’s DNS can take 24 – 48 hours to fully propagate. With that said, if this time has passed and you are still having issues, can you post your domain names so we can take a look?
Thanks!

I’d rather not have my domain names show up in google along a support request. FWIW, I do know the nameservers have populated because I can check that.
Can’t you just answer my question? How do I update my DNS records so the new domain’s nameservers will work with my Godaddy hosting account — without breaking my hosting account’s connection to its current domain name.
I see how to get into my DNS manager for my hosting account, but I’m afraid if I edit it, I’ll be replacing my current settings which I don’t want to do!
Please answer my questions. I think it would help other people, too. I’ve been googling for hours trying to find a clear answer, and all I find is more cryptic jargon.

Yes, the domains need to be set to send and the hosting account needs to be set to receive. Make sure you have added the domains to your hosting account:
http://support.godaddy.com/help/4688/managing-your-hosting-account-domains
You can also double check that the primary A record is pointing to your hosting IP address.
http://support.godaddy.com/help/5232
In your zone file there should be the A record, edit if necessary…
Host: @
Points to: [the IP address]

Ok, thank you. I added the domain to my hosting account. I went my other registrar (DotEasy) and confirmed the nameservers match the nameservers on my domain here; also, when I enter IP address listed in the “destination value” of A on DotEasy, it opens my hosting account here on GoDaddy.
However……I did notice upon further inspection….on DotEasy, four CNAME values (mail, ftp, webmail, apps) show destination values at DotEasy, not GoDaddy. Is this a problem? Do I need to edit all the CNAME values to match my hosting account here?
I’ve tried to get DotEasy to help, but they’ve now given me conflicting information four times (!) and I don’t trust they know what they’re talking about.

Can you explain the difference between “IP Address” and “Dedicated IP Address” because in my Hosting Dashboard under the server column, it shows both.
When I enter my “IP Address” into a browser, it says the website is not found. When I enter my “Dedicated IP Address” into a browser, it finds my website.
On DotEasy, my DNS “A Record” is set to my “Dedicated IP Address” and now I’m wondering if I should be using my “IP Address” instead?
But…my “IP Address” doesn’t seem to find my website? Should it?
My head hurts.

There are Shared IP addresses and Dedicated IP addresses. A Shared IP can support many uses, while a Dedicated is dedicated to your use. If you have a Dedicated that is the one to use.
But, if you have pointed the nameservers to here… here is where your active DNS is and here is where you would manage your DNS.

On this page, when it talks about “off-site DNS” it’s not clear exactly what “site” it’s talking about. Is they talking about domains registered off Godaddy? I’ve read it five times, and I’m still not sure if this page is even relevant to my problem?
The section “To Add Off-site DNS for a Domain Name” it says I should set my DotEasy namesevers to:
Standard DNS
mns01.domaincontrol.com
mns02.domaincontrol.com
Is this correct? If so, it explains my problems. I set my DotEasy nameservers to the information in my Hosting Manager shown when I click view next to the “Primary Domain DNS.”
My head still hurts.

@emb
Off-Site DNS does not apply to your situation. Will you want to add the domains to your hosting account, then point your nameservers to Go Daddy. You will then have your DNS through Go Daddy, and your CNAME records will be updated correctly for your domains.

“then point your nameservers to Go Daddy”
ARG. WHICH NAMESERVERS???
Where EXACTLY do I find the correct nameservers to enter into DotEasy domain registration? I want it to load my website hosted here on GoDaddy, but I don’t want to REPLACE my domain name registered on GoDaddy.
I’m really frustrated with this! My DotEasy domain has been down for 24 hours now!
Nate D said 1 year, 4 months ago:
Okay, it was sounding like you have already pointed the nameservers. The second section of this article will show you how to find the nameservers for your account:
http://support.godaddy.com/help/664/setting-nameservers-for-your-domain-names
Also, just in case…
registered = registered here
hosted = hosted here (your situation)
off-site = not registered nor hosted here.

One of your support techs just emailed me saying that even if the nameservers are set up correctly, it won’t work….. Quote: “if you try just pointing the domain (registered at DotEasy) to the root of your hosting account, most likely the site would not work or it would not pull up properly.”
It’s truly shocking the number of different answers I’ve gotten for the same exact question?!
Yes, I set the nameservers properly on DotEasy; nearly 48 hours ago now. According to http://www.whatsmydns.net early this morning, one server in Seattle showed the correct NS (for the doteasy domain.) But now, nothing shows at all. All red x, no green checkmarks for all the records.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had so much trouble with this. It’s hard for us to troubleshoot this over the Forums as we don’t have your domain name. Generally, once you point your nameservers at your domain registrar to Go Daddy, after propagation, you will then have control over your zone file through Go Daddy. The zone file is where you would set your A record. However, once the nameservers are correct, and your hosting is set up, we should update the A record for you.
What happens when you pull up your website?

@emb – Yes, yes… in a situation like this I suggest calling into support. It is hard to tell exactly what the problem is, and it is easier to get on the same page when talking with someone (especially if they have access).

Guys i am going through this same problem.I have a domain registered else where and i want to link it to my godaddy hosting.What do i do to make this possible.Pls give me a step by step guide not a link to an article cos they all are not clear.This is a problem many people face so just update your articles in “plain” English.What is an offsite DNS and when do i need to use one. Clarify this also,in the domain management why does it give you the option to add domains from other registers and then later tag them as hosted domains,Shouldn’t it be “off-site”.counting on you
