Why can’t I use free hosting for domains I want?

I have purchased a number of domains in the past and never needed hosting. Looking around my account I learn that I did get some free hosting in the past and never noticed. So I thought I would use that option for a new domain I bought. No go, can’t select it.

I contact Support and get this reply:
“If you purchased your domain name after Jan. 14, 2011, you cannot set up a free hosting account. The free hosting credits were only issued with domains purchased before that date and can only be setup on the domain they were issued with. For domains purchased after that date, you would need to purchase a hosting acccount.”

So I have hosting for some domains that don’t need it and no hosting for the one I want. Can’t switch the “credit” from one to the other, etc etc. Why can’t this be done?

Kind of brings the whole “we’re just a bunch of cool guys here to help you with domains and hosting” image down a notch.

@jaegernh,

The Free hosting Plans were discontinued. This service can only be used on Domains that were registered prior to January 14, 2011. These credits can not be switched from once Domain to another.

If you are wishing to utilize Hosting on Domains registered after this Date you would eith need to use the InstantPage that is provided with these Domains or Acquire a Hosting Account for the Domains.

The Hosting plans can be viewed by visiting: http://www.godaddy.com/hosting/web-hosting.aspx
