PTR records

How do I set a PTR record? I want Reverse DNS for my domains to resolve back to my domain, not ip.so-and-so.ip.secureserver.net.
Hmm, maybe this question belongs in a hosting forum?

@rjg
We do not offer reverse DNS with our hosting services. You have the ability to add a PTR record through our DNS Manager (under ‘Add SPF Record’); however, you will be unable to use a PTR record to configure reverse DNS in our system.

Are there any plans to add support for RDNS?
I’ve dealt with 5 hosting providers, not a comprehensive list to be sure, but GoDaddy is the only one I’ve dealt with that doesn’t support client PTR records. But since you DO support “vanity” name server records, why not add PTR. The first thing I do when diagnosing a server is a traceroute – before I do a whois/DNS probe. Wouldn’t it make more sense to impose one’s “vanity” on the RDNS reported by traceroute?
But then, GoDaddy costs about half of the other providers…
Thanks.

At this time, I do not have any information regarding the future offering of reverse DNS. If any information comes to light, I will be sure to post an update.

hmm… has there been any change in this policy? I have hundreds of domains with GoDaddy, I don’t want to have to move them all to MyDNS or Bind so I can get PTR records :/ This is a pretty standard feature IMO. Frankly, I expect more from GoDaddy.

You are welcome to add a PTR record to your domains’ zone files. However, we do not support reverse DNS with any of our IP addresses.

adamr,
If I understand correctly… we do not use any of godaddy’s IP addresses and all of our services are hosted in our facility. If we use PTR records through GoDaddy, would they still work as expected, for example, when third-party email services query our IP addresses?

As long as your ISP set up the reverse DNS on their end, you should have no problem using a PTR record to verify the reverse DNS.

I’m also appalled that GoDaddy doesn’t offer reverse DNS….it causes us tons of trouble and time to go through our ISP for PTR records. I’m very happy with GoDaddy otherwise, but this one issue has me looking for an alternative registrar.

many of my clients are rejecting our e-mail because of “DNSerr Relaying denied. IP name forged (PTR and A records mismatch”
So I can’t fix this?

I recommend reviewing the specific bounceback that is being generated with our 24 hour support team.

I can concur that this is still the behavior.
Our mail server is colocated at Rackspace.
Both support organizations were easy to reach out to.
In our case Rackspace owns the IP and the PTR.
They provide an easy user portal to create the entry.

To add a PTR record in the GoDaddy DNS Manager you need to do the following.
In the Zone Field Editor go down to the TXT(text) Zone
-> Click Add SPF Record
A window will open with 4 tabs (Inbound,Outbound, The WELL HIDDEN ‘PTR’, and Outsourced)
-> Go to the PTR tab
-> Check Include PTR and add your public IP
7 min expected wait time
