Current set:
WWW cname ***.***.com
@ MX ***.***.com
@ TEXT v=………
Now I need to set a cname to make my domain abc.com to the same site of www directs to.
But when I set:
@ cname ***.***.com
It failed.
“ERROR – A record of a different type exists for the hostname @, could not create CNAME”
What can I do?

@Chiefrock

It sounds like you’re trying to setup a CNAME record with the @ symbol as the host name. This will not work since you have an A Record with this entry. If your website is working with “www” and not when you just type the domain name in, then you’ll simply forward the domain to itself to resolve this issue.

You’ll want to set your A Record to 64.202.189.170. Once that is done, then you’re going to setup forwarding to point your domain name to http://www.globalgaurav.com. That way if your visitors type in just globalgaurav.com, they’ll be redirected to http://www.globalgaurav.com. For information on forwarding, please see:

http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/422

Give that a day or two to propagate and you’ll be all set! Let us know if that helps!

Thanks for your prompt reply, Clint.

So, the off-site DNS does not support naked domain CNAME, either the domain forward. It will never work.

It could be set in Total DNS as you said. First we need to add an A record to 64.202.189.170, then forward to domain to its self with www, like following:

@ A 64.202.189.170
Forward only to http://www.***.com (do not change the DNS sever)

But….but as I know, the forwarding server of GoDaddy has been blocked by China. So the GoDaddy users in China will never make it, neither a naked domain CNAME, nor the domain forwarding.

I do not have an A entry. I do not have any entry with @ but it won’t let me add a CNAME with @. How do I set this up?

If you want the WWW CNAME record to point to ‘@’, you would need to set up an ‘@’ A record that points to an IP address. Here is an article to get you started:

Hope this helps!

That still does not resolve the issue. We need our primary domain to be domainname.com, not http://www.domainname.com. Thus, forwarding will not be an option. I have read articles that show a GoDaddy hack using domainname.com. as a way to get around the restriction, although it appears GoDaddy is no longer allowing this.

Is this really a drawback of GoDaddy DNS that it can not allow a naked CNAME?

If so, then the only other solution I can think of is to use a different DNS provider.

@kumutu

I don’t understand the issue. Your primary domain is domainname.com. Some browsers automatically add the http://www., but you can still access your domain name through just the domain.

Please clarify the issue so we can point you in the right direction.

Still do not understand.
Should I use forward or anything?

@littlebirdie

That depends on what you want to accomplish. Please be specific so we can point you in the right direction.

I’m trying to do the same thing he’s doing: I want http://www.mydomain.com to automatically forward users to http://mydomain.com. What’s the ‘right’ way to do this? At one point I had my www subdomain pointing to mydomain.com but that seems to have stopped working.

@fowardvector

You just need to create a WWW CNAME record that points to @, and then an @ A record that points to the IP address for your domain name.

Hope this helps!

Is it not possible to have my domain name point to another address through a CNAME record? For example, I have a blog on Typepad that I want to use with my domain myexampleblog.com (without the www), so that when a visitor goes to myexampleblog.com, that domain is pointing to my blog. If someone types in http://www.myexampleblog.com, they would be sent to myexampleblog.com through a CNAME record of www pointing to @. Typepad requires you to use a CNAME record to point to your blog’s URL. Their knowledgebase suggests using forwarding to accomplish this. But if it is setup using forwarding, won’t the user’s address bar show my Typepad URL instead of myexampleblog.com when they visit my site through myexampleblog.com?

@chasselschwert

You can set up forwarding with masking, which will show your domain in the address bar rather than the URL that you are forwarding to.

I want to create a CNAME record so that you don’t have to type www to load my domain. What do I put in the “Host” field? What do I put in the “Points to” field?

@gbsinga

You will want to point the domain to your hosting account using an A record. The A record should point to the IP address of your hosting account.

Host: @
Points To: 123.45.678.90 (Your hosting IP)

This article will show you how to locate the IP address of your hosting account:

This article will show you how to update the domain’s A record:
