Domain forwarding without messing with the DNS

Hello! I am trying to help a client forward their domain to a new website, without changing their DNS settings. Under domain A, she has special DNS settings for her Microsoft Exchange server, but we bought another domain (domain B), for SEO purposes. The website for domain B is hosted else where. I would like domain A to be forwarded to domain B, without doing anything drastic to the DNS settings. In the GoDaddy control panel, for domain A, under Forwarding, I typed in the new domain, domain B, but I didn’t check the box “Update my DNS settings to support this change. (Recommended)”. The name servers for domain A are still with GoDaddy. Not sure if this makes sense, or can be done, without making other changes. So far, it’s not redirecting, and I don’t know if I should be patient and wait 24-48 hours, but most changes I make I notice right away. I did the update about 7 hours ago, which is why I am wondering if this is going to work or not. Thanks!

@rogerthat – Forwarding would not work without the change in the DNS, as the domain needs to point to the forwarding server. This involves a change to the main A record, has no affect on the MX records (mail). Simply put the A record would point thedomain.com to the forwarding service, no other records would be changed.

In order for forwarding to work, the domain name must point to a specific IP address. This article explains the necessary DNS changes to have your domain name work with Forwarding:

Well that did it! I saw the change take effect immediately. DNS stuff always gets me confused, and the last thing any client wants is their email to start acting up. Thanks again!
