Three month ago I buy a domain name through a company, also the company was suppose to maintenace the website with new information every week, however, that is not happening. I bough another websites and a hosting account and I am asking to the company to transfer me the domain to my hosting acct. They agree, but they are asking for my log in information (username and password). I am not very savvy in these matters, but I do not feel comfortable sharing this information. Do I need to share the information? Any option?

@boriken55,

It should not be necessary to provide your account login information to complete a transfer from another provider. This is also not an advised course of action if you are not familiar with the party making the request.

Assuming the domain is being transferred from another registrar provider, the following should include all the information that should be necessary to transfer the domain name to our services:

Transferring Domain Names to Us

As for the hosting, your current provider should be providing you with a copy of the site content you are transferring over. Once you have a copy of these files, you would simply upload this information yourself via an FTP client. We provide some general information for FTP access to your hosting account if you already have this setup within your account:

The domain is with you, and the person has the hosting with you too.

@boriken55,

If the domain is with us, then the current account holder would need to initiate a change of account request. This should not require access to your account, only contact information specific to your account. For more details about the information they need to start this request, you can review the following article:

Moving a Domain Name out of Your Account

As for the hosting, unfortunately we have no system in place that can transfer hosting plans or the site content directly between customer accounts. They would still need to provide you with a copy of the content that you can then upload into your own account via and FTP client as previously advised.

Thank you for all yourt help,

What exactly should be or what do you mean by “should not require access to your account, only contact information specific to your account”

@boriken55,

As outlined in the article I previously referenced, the current account holder has two options for transferring the domain over to your account. The first is to specify either your Login name or Customer Number. Since you are not sure about providing this information to them, you will want them to specify the contact information for your account instead.

The contact details will need to match what is already listed in your account, else the request will not recognize your account when the notification about accepting the change is sent out. If you are not comfortable with giving out all of your contact details, the account holder will need to at least specify the email address that is on your account.

Hi Chris,

Can you explain this point:
“They would still need to provide you with a copy of the content that you can then upload into your own account via and FTP client as previously advised.”

I have just got a domain name account change for:
http://www.saifeecomputers.com

After accepting the change, the website & email (webmail) are not working.

Can you please let me know what is the reason for non-functioning of the website and email?

Thanks
Hakeemuddin

@hakeemuddin – Though you can pass domains between accounts for free, there is no way to pass a hosting or email plans between accounts. You would need to create a new hosting account and manually move over the contents.

@hakeemuddin,

@Nate D is correct. As I had mentioned before, there is no system in place for transferring hosting accounts from one customer account to another directly. This also applies to email addresses if they were providing you with this service as well.

If you have not already done so, you would need to contact the previous account holder and request that they provide you with a copy of your site content they were previously hosting. If they were also providing you the email addresses, you may also want to request that they remove these from their account so that you can recreate these addresses to be managed under your own account.

Once you have the site files they were hosting, you will want to refer to the previously provided article on uploading the content to a hosting account I had provided. You will also want to review the following for setting up your email addresses:

Setting up Your Email Account in the Email Control Center
