GoDaddy and Dynamic DNS
William RS said 2 years, 2 months ago:
Hi, I’ve run into some problems using domains I’ve registered with GoDaddy and my server (which does not have a static IP, and is using DynDNS)
I need:
example.com
http://www.example.com
to both point to my dynamic DynDNS url. In addition, I need:
I’ve found difficulty when trying to ssh into my server (or host games on it) as well, as any port communication beyond HTTP and FTP don’t seem to be passed along to my server. I would like http://www.example.com:80 (or whatever number provided) to try to access my server on the specified port as well.
Any help is appreciated. I’ve seen several threads on forwarding (with or without masking) and some DNS record suggestions but none seem to be able to accomplish all of the above.
Thanks,
~D

I have included a link to a guide that will show you how to forward your domain to your DynDNS URL. The issue that you will find when forwarding your domain to your DynDNS URL is that you will be unable to SSH through your domain name itself. You are unable to do this because your domain name is actually forwarding through our server so you would essentially be trying to SSH into our server, which you will be unable to do. I am unaware of a work around, but maybe some of the other community members will have suggestions for you.

To properly use a real domain name with DynDNS is a premium paid service:
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/custom/
If you decide to upgrade you will need to update the nameservers here. Select “I have specific nameservers for my domains” and insert the proper records:
ns1.mydyndns.org (Required)
ns2.mydyndns.org (Required)
ns3.mydyndns.org
ns4.mydyndns.org
ns5.mydyndns.org
Here are the steps:

Thanks for the responses, they helped straighten me out on DNS records.
I was able to set this up for free with a http://www.zoneedit.com account, and switching my domain’s nameservers to point to zoneedit’s instead.
For any GoDaddys’ monitoring this thread, it would be nice if the DNS manager allowed you to CNAME everything to a dynamic ip (so both the http://www.example.com and example.com point to it). My last registrar supported that, it was convenient not to have to create an account with a third party.
Much thanks,

Glad you were able to get this resolved. Thanks for the feedback on allowing Dynamic IP’s. We are always looking for ways to improve our service and I will forward the information on.

Hi, I am planning run home web server using domains registered with GoDaddy. I wonder if buying premium DNS allow me to do that? Does go daddy provide any tools such as DDCLIENT that would allow me to keep updating my dynamic IP’s up todate?

@propertyplus
We do not currently offer a tool that will automatically keep your dynamic IP address updated. You would need to go through a 3rd party service for this functionality.

I too would like to see a service that allows us to update our dns records. I’m sure the community wouldn’t mind writing the rest of the tools if we were provided with an API of some sort.
Thanks,
