GoDaddy Domain Forwarding, No Masking, Hide IP?
jhonf said 1 year, 1 month ago:
I have a GoDaddy domain forwarding to my home webserver, but I want to hide the IP address and replace it with the domain name. I tried forwarding, but this does not allow me to show various URL subfolders when browsing, such as website.com/page1, it still shows website.com instead.
Is there a standard way to go about using godaddy to forward to your home webserver but still using website.com/index and website.com/other ?

The only way I can really think of there is to actually link it to your home server would be to use DNS to point to it directly. I’ve never really worked with a home server, so hopefully you have a dedicated IP address you can point to and you can setup the domain directly on the server. This, I believe, is probably the best method and maybe the only one that’s going to accomplish what you want.

by ” you can setup the domain directly on the server. ” do you mean there is some piece of software I can install on my server, or maybe some sort of file that needs to be created?
Basically, are you saying that the issue of showing subdirectories is not a setting I modify through godaddy?

@jhonf – The correct way would be to not use forwarding at all. This is a browser trick, only intended for use when you do not have control over the server (like direct a domain to your Facebook page for example).
Mapping a domain name is the real way to point it to a server. This would be done with an A record in your DNS-
Host: @ Points to: (the IP address)

I’ve tried that as well, but because my website required the port number to get through my firewall, and because it it is in a subdirectory, the IP must be set to http://184.189.250.64:8080/abregofiles/, which is not accepted by the DNS @ pointer.

@jhonf – Okay, to get it the way you want you would need a router that does not require you to specify the port, as well as your HTTP server software configured to send visitors to the correct folder.
You can do this the right way, or use the work-around (forwarding), there is no in-between.

I am currently forwarding my blogger account to my website, but every single page shows the name of my website, just http://www.shoes.com instead of http://www.shoes.com/home or http://www.shoes.com/make-a-purchase. This masking is disabling my paypal buttons and disabling any forwarding to necessary websites such as facebook. How do i fix this? I want to have a real website, i just want to use the blogger templates.

@karito – Do not use masking. You’ll want to point your domain name to Blogger, here are the steps:

The most common methodology to hide IP address is to use a proxy server in one type or another. A proxy server may be a pc that gives a network service to permit purchasers to form indirect network connections to alternative network services. A consumer connects to the proxy server so requests a association, file, or alternative resource on the market on a distinct server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the required server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy might alter the client’s request or the server’s response for numerous functions.
