smtpout.secureserver.net problem with Apple mail
jbh2phd said 2 years, 3 months ago:
I can’t send email…
can’t get Apple mail to connect with smtpout.secureserver.net using SSL on port 995 with password authentication.
Any idea how to fix this? Thx

@jbh2phd
995 is the port number for a POP connection with SSL enabled. You’ll need to change your outgoing server port to 465.

Port 465 doesn’t work either. And I am using POP. Still puzzled…

I had the same problem. Finally switched to Thunderbird as my email client, and it works great.
Good luck.

@jbh2phd: Could you give us the exact error message you get when trying to access the mailserver?
I don’t use Apple products myself so I can’t guarantee that I can actually help out here, but knowing the error itself is bound to shed more light onto this.

OK I figured it out by looking at how my iPhone configured itself automatically and worked just fine.
Just sent an explanation to tech support with details.
Mac OS X Mail->Preferences->Accounts is not nearly as well laid out as the equivalent on the iPhone. It’s confusing.
You need to understand that the “Advanced” tab on the Accounts window sets the port and whether or not your using SSL on the POP server (incoming mail), NOT the SMTPOUT server.
Setting the Advanced tab (for incoming POP) to port 995 and SSL with Password authentication works.
Now you have to go back to the “Account Information” tab to change the SMTP (outbound) server settings as follows:
Go to the drop-down menu labeled “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).
Mouse down on the menu, and select “Edit SMTP Server List…”
When the list comes up, choose the outbound server that the godaddy instructions (which you read, right?) gave you. In my case, it is
smtpout.secureserver.net
When you click that one, a window will pop up with the settings you might need to tweak. In my case, I chose the following
Use Custom Port 465
Use SSL (check)
Authentication: PASSWORD
Username: <your full email address>
Password: <your email password>
You might have to change port numbers in your case. Tech support suggestions seem to vary across cases, so open a ticket with them to get suggestions.

Cool, thanks for the extensive response!
I’m pretty sure GD will pick this up, they are always eager to get updates or suggestions for their services.

I cannot send mail and keep getting the following message “a copy has been placed in your Outbox. The recepient “jdoe@gmail.com” was rejected by the server. I have tried different ports and using and not using optional name and password on the outgoing server. Help!
Sgar said 2 years, 3 months ago:
Just changed smtpout.secureserver.net to port 465 with user name and password and it worked. Don’t know why because I have tried this before.

i tried all of them my apple mail do not send mail from secureserver.net but i sends from all other accounts on apple mail. I am able to send mail as long as i restore the system, and it works for couple of days. if my macbook apple mail does not send mail than my ipad does the same. if apple mail sends mail than ipad starts to send. its very ironic.

@alpercan
What types of rejection messages are you seeing when sending fails? Unfortunately there can be a lot of reasons for the sending of mail to fail, so without some further details I wouldn’t know where to begin troubleshooting this. Thanks!
malbin said 2 years ago:
I think the correct protocol for Godaddy should be that under ‘Outgoing Mail’ when you click ‘Server Options’ you should set ‘authentication’ to ‘Password’ for Godaddy servers, but an IPAD bug interferes on the device settings and switches it back to another authentication mode when you click ‘done’ to keep the password authentication choice. Authentication at the Godaddy end therefore is not received in username and password format, and the connection to the server cannot be established and the mail cannot be sent.

@malbin
Thanks for the information. This may well be the case. You are correct that use of our services requires the authentication mode to be set to Password. If this isn’t possible on the iPad for some reason, it would be expected that login attempts would fail.
However, at the moment I wasn’t able to find any documentation on this being a bug with the iPad. If you are having trouble with yours, if you haven’t already done so I recommend you run this by Apple Support to see if they have a fix or know what is causing the authentication mode to switch back. Keep us updated if you get any more information. Thanks!
