Unlimited IMAP acct. Doesn’t Sync Sent Messages
quillson said 1 year, 7 months ago:
I just became a GoDaddy customer for e-mail hosting. I bought the Unlimited Plan, and set up my iPhone and Mac for IMAP access.
Received e-mails are behaving properly, but Sent e-mails are not showing up across platforms. Example: I compose & send a message from either my iPhone or Mac, but it does not appear in the Sent Folder on GoDaddy webmail. I have double checked my save settings for the outbound server, and they appear correct.
GoDaddy tech support just told me that their IMAP does not support Sent e-mail syncing. He even checked with a supervisor, came back and told me that only Received messages are synced across platforms.
That can’t be true, can it? Anyone out there who can shed some light on this? Thanks!

@quillson,
Some email clients; such as Mac Mail and iPhone, do not forward sent messages to the ‘Sent Items’ folder. Because of this, we really can’t guarantee that your sent messages will appear across all platforms.
To work around some client limitations, you might consider setting up your sent messages to also be addressed to yourself when sending out mail. This received message sent form yourself could then be filtered to your Sent Items folder.

@chrisg,
Thanks for your quick response, and your suggested workaround.
Is this an issue with all hosting companies’ IMAP accounts, or just GoDaddy’s? I ask this because both the Mac and iPhone Mail clients have specific IMAP account settings for where on the server to save Sent messages.
BTW… My business partner is seeing the same issue on his Android phone.
So… which e-mail clients DO work properly with your IMAP system?

@quillson,
I cannot comment for other hosting or email companies, but this is not really an issue. Simply a matter of fact that not email clients are developed the same.
For that reason, Go Daddy constantly strives to provide services that are compatible with multiple applications. And we continue to roll out with updates when possible to maintain or make new compatibilities available. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a list of what clients do or do not handle sent mail differently from our IMAP system.
As for what you mentioned with IMAP settings being available in Mac and iPhone that allows you to specify a sent folder for messages to be saved to. I have just tested and confirmed this being available in Advanced Settings for iOS 5 devices.
The new updates in iOS 5 allows you to setup mailbox behavior for Drafts, Sent, and Deleted mailboxes when operating an email address through the device. You should be able to specify these folders under the advanced section of your Outgoing Mail Server settings.
As for Android devices, I know that early versions of the Droid OS directs mail to a “Sent” folder instead of “Sent Items” we use. I cannot confirm if later Android OS versions are capable of being setup to specify a folder behavior like the iOS 5 devices. Your partner may want to check with either his Mobile Device provider or Android support forums for more information for the specific OS he has.

K-9 Mail seems to sync the folders on Android 2.3.4 perfectly, but you need to designate your Sent folder as “Sent Items” to match Godaddy’s naming.
More- Settings- Account Settings- Folders- Sent Folder, select “Sent Items”.
Otherwise what you send will stay on the phone in Sent instead of syncing to Sent Items.

@slogner,
An excellent suggestion. Thank you for taking a moment to bring this up.

Just wanted to add a solution I found to a similar problem.
Issue: I am using Apple Mail as an email client for my GoDaddy (unlimited) IMAP email account. In the GoDaddy webmail portal I notice that messages sent from Apple Mail are saved in a Sent Messages folder while messages sent from GoDaddy’s webmail browser are saved into a folder called Sent Items.
In order for my sent emails to sync across all devices I moved my Apple Mail sent emails to the GoDaddy IMAP Sent Items folder as it appeared in my sidebar and then selected that same Sent Items folder where I moved everything to and went to MAILBOXES>USE THIS MAILBOX FOR>SENT and then waited for the server to sync everything I moved in there. Done. Hope this helps people out.

Thank you iokn.
I am halfway there.
Send items from my iphone synch with outlook, but sent items from outlook are not synching on the phone.
Is there a setting in outlook needed?
Thanks again, I am 4 hours into this.

having the same issue. using MailDroid and the sent mail does go into a “Sent Items” folder as opposed to just “Sent.” I used to be able to see the sent mail, now I just get a message at the very bottom of the screen saying “Connecting in ____ s (seconds)… Try now (in blue that’s a link) and when I do either one, wait or try it now, nothing happens; blank screen. Can’t see the sent mail [or anything else]. Does this have to do with account setting, smtp relays, etc. or is it the the issue described above? can’t see how that makes sense for IMAP. Thought that was the purpose and one of the main differences from POP.
