I’m about to open a Godaddy account (I think). I’ve had a website for 8-9 years. It has sql database with about 20,000 items. I’ve been paying $20 a month hosting with it, but barly make enough to cover the cost of the hosting so it’s basically just been a hobby. Times are changing & it has to be more than just a hobby for now on. So I closed it up, changing the name, & changing some other things to earn some money with it when I open back up under a new name.

Meanwhile… I’m seeing things like this:

http://www.myhostingpicks.com/godaddy-hosting-reviews.html

And getting my doubts if I should go with Godaddy now. Is this stuff true? Can Godaddy handle a sql database website with 20,000+ items & always getting new items & members submitting to the database daily/hourly? If so, can I also use expression web?

Thanks! Sorry for such a noob question. :)

Greg,
I have been with GoDaddy for 5+ years and they have never let me down. Many people right now have converted the 80′s “Get Rich Quick” schemes to the internet with the invention of CMS, Blogging Utilities and other GUI Interfaces to make more difficult work faster. People discover they need a host and run to hosting companies extremely ill-informed regarding what they need or what to choose and end up discovering after the fact that what they selected would not work for what they needed. They end up walking away, tail between their legs thinking “It’s hopeless.”

I always recommend to everyone looking at a Host, first take a look at the requirements to run a CMS or E-Commerce Solution that interests you or call before you buy. Make sure that you ask, what do I need to make XX work. Go Daddy reps are extremely informed about works with their systems and have very rarely if ever lead me to purchase something that would cause problems in the end. However, purchasing a plan you are not sure will work and then running to a GoDaddy Rep to solve your problems is merely a cop-out for not going to a Go-Daddy Rep first.

A note regarding the Go-Daddy smack sticks across the internet. Something that is important to know is right now Go-Daddy has the largest market share for Hosted Accounts across the internet. It’s different when Jo-Bobb’s Hosting has 2,000 customer complaints and are a small business than when you know the leader has people complaining. Complaints happen, they are not the norm and in larger communities they do appear more often. I play World of Warcraft, their community boasted a whopping 11 million customers. If even 1% of 11 million people complained about WoW it appears like a lot of customer complaints but in relationship to their market share, 1% would be below normal of any community. I would keep this in mind as you made your choice to choose or not to choose Go-Daddy and don’t forget to call and make sure that as far as what you absolutely need, you are covered.

I also have been with Godaddy 5+ years, they have great service as long as you are status quo. But the first time you get in a bind… well lets just say. don’t bend over around here. my account lapsed last month due to an expired credit card. I caught it and put in a new card. But an important fax came thru while it was expired (fax thru email). they blocked it. I called customer support and yes the fax was there, he was even able to bring it up and see that yes it was from the customer I was waiting on, I was so happy. But then he told me if I wanted to read it, it would cost me 150 bucks. So guess what. not only do they not get the 150, but now they lose the 300 plus a year I currently spend with them. Adios Godaddy

You better not listen to these employees trying to get your business. Godaddy is the very WORST company there is to deal with. If you lose your email due to changing service providers, and you need your customer number or password, you can forget about getting it back. They were SO lazy, they couldn’t send me my customer n umber after faxing them all the information they requested, they instead ARGUED with me over the problem. Their customer service people are underpaid, rude, inconsiderate, and the most awful bunch of people you will EVER deal with. Use Namecheap.com instead for buying domain names and use Host Gator for your hosting and you will be happy. Host Gator customer service is SO good that they have someone online LIVE 24/7 if you get in a bind and these guys are NICE, and SMART as well. Right now I am letting ALL my domains expire here and renewing at namecheap.com. They also have 24/7 live support. Godaddy doesn’t even have cPanel interface with hosting and ALL of their backend software is seriously outdated. Bob Parsons is too cheap to give you good customer service, and the latest technology. Everyone I know despises GoDoody and I do too. I am moving all 21 domains I have to namecheap.com. See ya later GoDoody.

Thanks guys (or gals). Your information has been very useful. I’ve reserved the domain & had a pleasant experience on the phone with the Godaddy rep discussing reliability & a few other things. It appeared as though Godaddy hired an answering service with the service employees working on commission answering calls & helping customers with new orders (I’m not 100% sure on that though). That’s always a let down, but he was very informed & knew exactly what he was talking about. Answering service employees working on commission (for any business) are always in a hurry to get you off the phone so they can get to the next caller & earn more commission, but I didn’t experience that whatsoever. He took the time to answer in detail every question I had.

A++

Thanks again guys!
Peace… :)

I have been satisfied with GoDaddy’s services for 7 or 8 years now. However, there is a boycott of commerce from the police state of Arizona over SB 1070 and I will be transferring my domains and setting up hosting elsewhere.

I was satisfied until today. Today they handled very bad 3 expiring domain issues I had. They were considering .eu domain names, and although in their emails were mentioning that the domains will expire on 4/30/2010, they informed me that it actually meant at 00:00 of that day, and asked me an $80 redemption fee. I found this quite misleading because the average person when reads the name is expiring at 4/30/2010 understands that can renew it during that day.

Moreover the redemption fee is complety unnecessary since it has nothing to do with payments asked by the .eu domains central organization (eurid.eu). I know this very well since I owned a registrar company for .eu domains in the past. This fee is completely an internal fee imposed by godaddy.com.

In any case even if typically correct, I didn’t like at all this particular business tactics, specially towards a customer owning 55 domains with them for years (53 after refusing to pay the high redemption fees). If you feel the same I would advise you against using their services, if you feel I am exaggerating then I can tell you go for it, their customer department employees are very polite and helpful, but they can’t help a lot when have to deal with such business practices.

They asked me very high amount as a redemption fee for 3 .eu domains.
The domains were expiring at 4/30/2010 according to their email, but when I mentioned this they told me they meant the 00.00 hour of 4/30/2010, which I found very misleading.
Morover I know that .eu controlling authority (eurid.eu) hadn;t imposed yet any redemption fee (I
checked their domain database).
If you find these kind of business practices unacceptable then I would advise you against using their services. If you think I am exaggerating then you will probably be satisfied with them.

Hi Greg,

Unfortunately, you’re probably only going to get extreme responses from a forum post. Most people aren’t going to respond unless they are really unhappy or really big fans.

Most people will speak with their wallet, though. To that point, according to Netcraft®, Go Daddy is the world’s largest hostname provider. I haven’t spoken to all of them personally, but I would have to guess that if our customers were dissatisfied, they would likely not stay with us.

I agree with PaulDP; you will always notice that many forums no matter what (gaming, hosting, etc) have a majority of people who are unhappy about something. The people who are extremely happy and satisfied tend to not use the forums unless they have a problem or issue. It’s kind of sad that this happens but also as mentioned above if you look at the total customer base that go-daddy has then the percent of complaints is probably under 1%.

I’ve had numerous online ecommerce sites since the early 90′s, and I can say with complete certainty that there are people who will never be happy no matter how you try to please them. They get a bug up their Asz and no matter what happens it stays there. Also as someone else stated many times people buy products and then realize they didnt get what they need and blame Go-daddy for their mistake. I see reviews like this all the time on Newegg. People purchase an item and give a negative review because the product they purchased didnt have a specific option. Yet the description was very specific & accurate and they didnt want to pay for the better item. So bottom line think about everything very carefully before making a decision based on less than 1% of the total community.

Ive been dealing with go daddy for at least 10years. Only this year was the first time I decided to host my ecommerce site with them and have had extremely great CS both on the phone & online. Yes sometimes you may call and get a newer person or someone less informative but then call back, chances are you will get someone who has been working with Go-daddy for a long time and they know the ins & outs of every aspect or you can request to talk to someone more knowledgeable.

Hi, ive been with godaddy for the past week. Some of the support ive been getting is great, however most of the support ive found to be alittle edgy. (tech support trying to sell you discounts and extended contracts)

Apart from all the mess with my DNS issues the rest is fine.
