Release for general registration after a cancellation

How long might the registry hold a domain name after cancellation before releasing it for general registration? I’m looking at a particular domain name that have been expired 67 days, but the Whois still lists it as presently in a redemption period. According to GoDaddy’s FAQ, it should have been cancelled after 42 days and would be being held by the registry. How can I find out when the domain will be released by the registry so I can buy it?

@bigdh
Generally, the domain name will be released to the public within 2-3 months. However, we wouldn’t be able to guarantee a release date.
You may want to look into taking out a backorder for the domain. You can view more info on backorders at the link below:

Is that 2-3 months after the redemption period (42 days) is over or 2-3 months after expiration?

@bigdh
Bryce is referring to the length of time from when the domain expires, not the redemption period. You may have already found this information, however we do have a help article on how we handle expired domains:
What is your process for handling expired domain names?
Please note that after we release the domain, the registry might hold the domain name before releasing it for general registration.
