Web Hosting Wordpress Setup
joe_fisher said 11 months, 1 week ago:
Hi there,
I’m not technical at all and have setup a website but wish to use a wordpress theme. I have installed the application (I think) but I realised that I’d ordered the linux version of web hosting and have changed it to Windows which is what my computer runs off (will this make a difference anyway?).
The change from linux to windows is still pending and I want to know:
how long it takes to be changed over
I’ve installed wordpress as under (my domain)/wordpress-setup – I don’t have a blog and is this correct?
I managed to upload a couple of themes using filezilla to the wordpress theme folder on my site, but I need to active them/login into the wordpress site and customise. I can’t seem to do this and hopefully someone here can assist me?
Thanks
Joe

@joe_fisher
The operating system of your hosting account should be based of the application you are working with to create the website rather than the operating system of your computer. Since Wordpress is a PHP based application, we recommend running Wordpress in the Linux hosting environment. I would recommend changing back to the Linux hosting environment.
Switching Your Hosting Account Operating System
When you change the operating system of a hosting account, it can take up to 72 hours to complete. However, the change does not typically take the full 72 hours. There is no way to stop an operating system change request once it has been initiated.
You are welcome to install Wordpress into a subdirectory. However, if you’d like the Wordpress site to display when you access http://www.yourdomain.com, you’ll want to install Wordpress in to the root of the hosting account.

Here’s an article that will help you get started with Wordpress:

Thanks Adam
It has changed to Windows – but I guess now I need to change it back to linux.
However, I am not getting the word press admin page appear when I enter the suffix onto my address and attempt to go that site, this is despite installing wordpress as you say in the root of my hosting account.
All I get is my website page, and as far as I can see the admin page should be http://www.joefisherphoto.com/wp-admin – and it’s not working??

This will be an easy fix.
Currently, the domain is pointing to our InstantPage service. Once you switch the hosting account back to Linux and have access to the Hosting Control Center again, you will want to point the domain’s A record to the IP address of your hosting account.
This article will show you how to locate the IP address of your hosting account(Once the OS change goes through):

Thanks Adam.
The hosting account has switched back to linux. I have now pointed my A Record to the new IP address. However
When I go to my website page, I get a blank screen with the message: Error establishing a databsse”.
When I go to my wp-admin site (joefisherphoto.com/wp-admin) I get the following message:
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at joe1216809193142.db.9482149.hostedresource.com. This could mean your host’s database server is down.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.
Have I done something wrong?
Please note that I have not re-installed the word press application – when I installed it it was on the windows account. Will this affect it?
Thank you once again
Joe

@joe_fisher
This error typically indicates that the database connection string information within your wp-config.php file is not set correctly. I just checked out your admin URL and it appears that you were able to address the issue. Let us know if you need any additional assistance!
