Please advise how to or where I can obtain detailed information about how to set a network for multi sites properly, in using wordpress.

Due to personal demand, I only can use subdomains in setting up the multi sites by wordpress. All I can figure out till now seems that I need to configure Apache file as below..

<VirtualHost 72.249.85.20:80>
DocumentRoot OUR_SERVER_DIRECTORY/domain-mapping-test/wordpress
ServerName domain-mapping-test.wpml.org
ServerAlias subsite1.wpml.org
ServerAlias subsite2.icanlocalize.com
ServerAlias subsite3.wp-types.com

<Directory OUR_SERVER_DIRECTORY/domain-mapping-test/wordpress>
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride Limit Options FileInfo
DirectoryIndex index.php
</Directory>

</VirtualHost>

Please advise how am I supposed to do next.. @@

If you are working in the shared Hosting environment, you may want to check out this article I found at:

http://tutorialsave.com/how-to-enable-wordpress-multi-sites-sub-domains-on-godaddy/

In order to be able to use subdomains, you will need to add a dedicated IP address to the hosting account:

Adding or Removing a Dedicated IP Address from Your Hosting Account

If you’re working with a Virtual Dedicated or Dedicated server, you may want to check out this article:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network

Hope that helps!

Thank you very much, Adam,

I have set up my multi sites wordpress on my shared hosting server, with a premium domain service.
I have a dedicated IP for my web server.

However, my setup seems not funtion well yet, ’cause, I cannot see any data in my subdomains…
Do I need to install another wordpress in the subdomains, at which I use domain mapping plugin to point at?

I am also trying to figure out how to put Multilingual CMS into this network… yet, I think I need to solve the above problem first..

Best regards,
Kay

@bwingnet

You may want to check to make sure you have a wildcard A record entry along with an A record for each of your subdomains that points to the dedicated IP address of your hosting account.

This article will show you how to locate the IP address of your hosting account:

How do I find the IP address of my hosting account?

This article will show you how to update the domain’s A records:

Thanks a lot, Adam,

I am pretty sure that I set the A record for all subdomains to point to the dedicated IP, using the Premium DNS service,
However, It seems still not working properly.
I can create multi sites from the wordpress, yet, all sumdomains are not functioning.

In addition, I also try to use WPMU service.
Problem is when I activate the WPMU plugins, It shows that I cannot set them as subdomains.

Any other suggestion, please?

Thanks again. :)

@bwingnet

The articles I posted above will show you how to confirm the subdomains are pointing to the dedicated IP address. If you have any doubts, please post a few examples of the subdomains you are working with and we’ll be happy to check on your behalf.

Adam

thanks.. I have checked your suggested articles, and I am sure I have been set up them correctly till now.

At this moment, my setting is as follows.

Host Point to TTL
1. * 182.50.146.243 1hour
2. cn 182.50.146.243 1hour
3. en 182.50.146.243 1hour
4. tw 182.50.146.243 1hour
5. kr 182.50.146.243 1hour
6. www 182.50.146.243 1hour
7. @ 182.50.146.243 1hour

182.50.146.243 is the IP of the dedicated server.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,
Kay

As long as 182.50.146.243 is the correct IP address, those DNS settings look correct. If you are still having trouble, can you reply with the domain name of your site so that we can take a better look at it?

enihongo.org

@bwingnet

When I visit your site using the various subdomains, I see that some of the subdomains work but some of them don’t. This looks like it might be a configuration issue with the application you are using.

The only other thing that I can think of is if enihongo.org is setup as an alias/secondary domain name and it is not configured to use the root of the hosting plan. Using the Dedicated IP address with multi site WordPress usually requires WordPress to be installed on the root of your hosting plan. If it’s not installed on the root of your hosting plan, you might need to manually configure the subdomains on your hosting plan.

Hi Gary,

thanks for your prompt reply by return.
Does that mean that I need to move my files under enihongo.org folder to the root folder, using the FTP File Manager?

Best regards,
Kay

Or.. do I need to change my Premium DNS from enihongo.NET to enihongo.ORG?

Please advise. thanks.

@bwingnet

If you wish to move the site to the root of the hosting account, the change would require several steps. If enihongo.org is not currently the primary domain, moving the files to the root would affect whatever site is currently the primary domain name. If this is not an active site, then you would not have any complications. You would also need to update the folder associated with the domain name on your hosting account. This article explains how you can manage the domains associated with your hosting account:

http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/4688/managing-your-hosting-account-domains

It is always recommended that you make a backup of your site before making any changes.

It does not appear that this would involve and DNS changes at this time.

@bwingnet

I’m not exactly sure what changes were made. Premium DNS applies to all domain names in your account and was not related to this matter. I recommend that you contact our support teams so that they can take a detailed look at your account and better review this matter with you.
