Windows Server 2008 reinstalled – can SSL cert be used for new image

A virtual server has just had to have Windows Server 2008 completely reinstalled. Can we use the existing SSL cert or do we need to create a new Certificate Request and apply for another Cert?

Unless you still have the private key from when you originally created the CSR for the certificate, you will most likely need to re-key the certificate to generate a new SSL. This would not require you to request a brand new SSL, it would only re-issue the existing SSL using the new server information. Steps on how to re-key your SSL can be reviewed here:
