Download Tracking

Many files are too large to be sent by e-mail and certain types of files (like .exe files) will not pass e-mail filters. Instead, one must send an e-mail to a recipient instructing him to sign on and to then download the file. In many instances, it is very important to be able to tell weather or not the intended actually did download the file. This does not seem to be currently possible.

You can use the ‘public link’ option within Online Storage to send an email to a large file. You also have the ability to set a password for the public link if you are sending a file/folder that should not be made available to the public.
Sending a Public Link in Online Storage
However, you will be unable to track if the file was downloaded or not. I will pass along a suggestion to our development team for consideration in future updates.

This is already in the product; If you hover your mouse over the little chain link icon on a shared file, it will tell you how many times it has been downloaded, e.g. “Made public on 05/04/2012 Downloads: 2″.

Since Iomega ceased operations, I have been using GoDaddy to send software updates to customers of my small software business.
If I send download links to the same update file to “A”, “B”, “C” and “D”, it is not enough to know that two of them actually downloaded the file. I have to know which two in order for me to track what software version each of these people has.
With Iomega, I could see to whom I sent a download link and the date I sent it. Furthermore, I could see if an individual customer actually downloaded the file and when they did so. Additionally, the link would expire after 16 days.
Please don’t think my intention is to knock the GoDaddy system, but what I have described would bring a new level of utility to what you have done. As it is now, I have to ask my customers to e-mail me if they have downloaded an update file.

Thank you for the feedback. I will pass it along to our development team for review.
As a workaround, you may want to copy the file however many times to match the number of customers that will be receiving the file. You could then rename the files to something unique to that particular recipient. I understand that this is not an ideal solution as the copied files will be taking up additional space within the plan, but this would allow you to see if each individual downloaded the file.
If any information comes to light regarding the tracking functionality within Online Storage, I will post an update here.
