Is there a way to password protect a folder so that when I share it, there is confidence of security? I want to share a folder with some confidential data but don’t want to just provide a public link. Any insight appreciated.

@bbrownatl

The other option is to create collaborators to share the folders of your Online File Folder, however, this means that other users will also have to have an Online File Folder account. If the users do not have an account, then you would have to send a public link:

I wanted to second this. We really need to have the ability to send a public link, but have a password set to that folder. This was one feature I really liked about the iDisk. Please add password protection to your list of important developments. I share my folder with many people and do not want them to have to create an account.

I’m with you on the password protected folders. I’m just getting set up and have already run into this (lack of) requirement. Hope this is on the table for future versions!

I agree, password protecting files/folders, and being able to allow users without OFF accounts to access selected files/folders would keep me subscribed to this service.

I absolutely agree that password protected folders are important – especially in dealing with client-sensitive data. Please let us all know when this functionality can occur. I have been used to having this service with my previous host.

I too have come to Online File Folder in order to replace workflows previously platformed in iDisk. I

This post is confusing to me for a number of reasons:

-1) with iDisk, you can password protect your Public Folder. But there is no other way to share a FOLDER that is located in your Documents Folder. You can only share individual files. The only way to “share” a folder would be to either give the recipient access to your entire account, or, zip the folder and its contents into an archive, a single zip file. Then, that single file can be sent as a link for download, and you can also specify a password for that download.

-2) My other source of confusion about this post is that I don’t really understand the need for password protection of a Public link. Can someone please answer me this question: If I share a file contained within an Online File Folder by sending a download link to a recipients email, aren’t other files located in that same Online File Folder inaccessible to the recipient.

I’m not talking about sharing a folder. I’m talking about sending a link to one individual file within a “private” folder. Are other files in that “private” folder secure?

@pblin_west

The Public Link feature allows you to send a link for either a folder or an individual file. At this time, there is no way to protect these files, and anyone could directly access that Public Link and view the files. Hope this clears up any confusion.

On this issue, I would like to see this protection or the ability to set permissions on individual folders. I have my folders set up for ftp access, not public link or collaborators. At this time all folders are accessible to my techs when they log in to the account. The only folder that appears to be hidden is the “shared folders” folder. I would like to be able to lock down other folders in the tree.

@intecsolutions

You could encrypt individual files, however that wouldn’t necessarily make them encrypted via FTP. I’ll be sure to pass this suggestion along for review.

Thanks!

I also require the same feature, I just assumed that it was available when I purchased the service, its kind of useless to colloborate with my clients, using this tool… its sad :-(

@ziggysprings

Thank you for posting. We recently made an update to Online File Folder so that you can password protect Public Links. When you set up the Public Link, either for a file or a folder, you can select to have it Password Protected. That way, the recipient of the link must type in the password before viewing the files.

Hope this helps!
