Password Protection for individual files/folders/users

My particular issue seems to be unique, but the problem in general seems to be common enough to other users that it demands some attention.

I use Microsoft OneNote (2007 and 2010) to maintain school notes, work on shared notebooks with business associates, and so forth. It has a built in tool to synchronize to a WebDAV folder, such as OFF provides. I’ve had some issues with your WebDAV setup, but that is another story all together. The problem I’m writing about today is for password protection and/or additional user logins for individual files/folders in my Online File Folder account.

You see, if I want to share a notebook with someone else (one of the many nice features of OneNote), I have to provide them the URL for the WebDAV (no problem) and the login information to be able to edit the appropriate files. Do I want to give my classmates, friends, co-employees, etc, my own personal login information for them to be able to access, view, and edit these files? Of course not! I don’t want them to have access to ALL of my files – just the ones that I give them permission to.

If GoDaddy’s hosting had some sort of WebDAV implementation, this would be so much simpler – I could simply put the notebook in a special folder, edit the permissions for it, and create separate FTP users/passwords for either a group or individual user. Nice and simple.

Bottom line, this is just one of many reasons why some sort of additional username/password setup would be extremely helpful. Especially if this separate username/password database was particular to each OFF account – for example, I have two OFF accounts, and it would be nice to have a username “Test1″ be able to access my first AND second accounts, even if “Test1″ isn’t an official “Online File Folder” account – understand? They can only login to the files/folders that they are given permission to access by the OFF user. That way, you don’t even have to bother with conflicts of FTP/OFF usernames being used by other customers.

But I digress. On some level, it would be very useful (apparently to many people) to be able to require/provide additional usernames/passwords, independent of the OFF account-owner, to friends, clients, business partners, and about a million other possible reasons.

Please consider this for your soonest updates to Online File Folder – as a long-term customer (and reseller) of GoDaddy, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Many thanks,
Atom

@web_site_creat

I don’t think that you are looking to do this however you can share these files by sending the link via email. This will allow others to review it with out having to give out your user name and password.

You can do this by following these steps:

In regard to the multiple logins for Online File Folder, please email suggestions@godaddy.com with this information so that our developers can review it for possible future releases.

I agree, I often have the need to share specific files with a business associate but i don’t want these files accessible via a public link. I’d like to be able to share files securely with a username/password.

Same here. Construction company that shares project documents via public links, but would like the capability for additional temporary users that have the ability to upload. IE Architects and Engineers to collaborate design documents. The tough part about this that i can see would be notification of posts so that we all know something has been uploaded.

Hey Folks,

We want to thank everyone for their suggestion. I am an Online File Folder user, and I too would love to see this feature added. I’m going to pass this along to our developers for review and consideration! We appreciate your input.

Yes,,,,, an absolutely essential feature. By logging into one of these you need to also be able to grant the logee uploading privileges as well

Has anyone found a suitable workaround for the multiple user/password constraint? Do you open another account and use it to share with others? Do you buy a file server account use WebDav or a file system?

@LW

The only way to do this with Online File Folder is to purchase multiple accounts. However, I’m interested in hearing suggestions from other users. Hopefully we can get some activity on this thread.

Since one cannot password protect subfolders and must create multiple accounts to allow a subset of employees access a shared folder, might it be possible to be logged in/mapped to multiple accounts at the same time?

Thanks.

@Huckie21,

Each account that you are logged into would have to be done from a different browser. You would not be able to access two different accounts using the same browser.

We appreciate all of the feedback and suggestions. I hope to see some of these features in future versions of the program!

I sometimes use password protected zip files to provide secure access to multiple files and folders. Not the best solution but it works under limited access circumstances.
