Workspace Desktop functionality

My own experience indicates that you can ftp a file to the server 4 to 10 times faster than “backing up” a file. Would you please explain why that is?
Also, is it possible to ftp a folder and then use the “Backup” utility to keep it up to date?

@senator,
If you are backing up the same 20 MB file daily, each time the backup is being synced it should overwrite the original file. If you were uploading a different file name, then yes an additional 20 MB would be used as it’s not overwriting the original.
You are also correct in that FTP access will run faster. As to the specific reasons why, I would not be able to go into detail. However, I can confirm that you should be able to use FTP with a specific folder and then later use the same folder with our backup utility as well as any other sync features supported within Online File Folder.

OK, that helps. It “overwrites” the file with the same name. Got it. But if a file has been deleted on my hard drive, it will NOT be deleted on the server. Do I have that right?

SENATOR wrote earlier:
“The easiest and fastest way to upload files from your PC to OFF is by using an FTP client such as FireFTP, assuming you use Firefox. My testing indicates it’s 4-8 times faster than using WSD. The problem is (or my first question is), once you have the files/folders in OFF that have been ftp-ed, you can’t maintain the folder using WSD. It appears that in order to use OFF as a backup repository, the files & folders must be placed on the server using WSD. Is that correct?”
And @STACEYH responded:
“You’re correct, the files and folders would need to be uploaded using WSD to Online File Folder in order to manage them.”

Ugh! That is most discouraging.
I am 24 hours “new” to ONLINE FILE FOLDER….
Alas, I presume it is my own short-sightedness that this information was not clearly seen by me before I uploaded most of my folders/files by FTP.
Perhaps my short-coming might assist GoDaddy’s staff in preparing a WARNING/CAVEAT to new users who would like to use OFF’s “sync” capabilities?
Is there absolutely no way to “bring in” FTP files so that they will sync?
(it would seem that given the capabilities of “CODE”, that one would be able to accomplish this?)
Thank you.

@sr_in_san_dieg,
I will gladly forward your comments about a warning message for the Online File Folder sync capabilities to be taken into consideration by our developers.
In the meantime; as you have read from the previous comments, it will not be possible to sync files that were uploaded via FTP instead of through the Workspace Desktop interface. If you have certain files that you wish to be managed by these features, they would need to be removed and uploaded through the Desktop interface.

These questions and answers are being very useful to me. I am not a hi-tech expert, so I don’t undestand what the “OFF” and “FTP” devices are.
Also, I am about 36 hours “new” to Online File Folder and my computer is working nonstop since then on my total 40GB upload, due to the fact that it is the first upload of all my computer files (pics, docs etc). And, yet, “Workspace Desktop” shows that it’s only about 17% of the “TOTAL”.
What is the best thing to do, in this case? Turn off the computer for some hours in order to take a rest? Let it work for more 10 days nonstop? In fact, I didn’t know before (when I joined Online File Folder) that it could take such a big amount of time to upload my files.
In time, my broad band connection is 10 Mbps (for downloads) and 800 Kbps (for uploads).
Is there a faster or better way to do it?
Thanks!

@cesarbr,
I believe it was earlier mentioned in this thread that Online File Folder has an upload limit of 1 GB at a time. If you are attempting to upload a total of 40 GB at once, this is likely why your upload has stopped at 17%.
You will need to break your content into smaller segments of 1 GB a piece to be uploaded at a time.
