Google product category question

Hello,

Google implemented there new guidelines for the product category back in September, I was able to use the work around that was posted on this forum with great success. Since QSC has been updated to work with the categories it seems to me that I have to change the categories in my site to match Google’s taxonomy.
When I applied the work around I just added the lines of code needed without touching the category structure of my site. My question is do I have to redo my categories to match Google’s for QSC to update properly?
The work around was successful, but its tiresome to ad code every time I add a product on my site and I would like to keep my current category structure.

Thanks in advance for your reply’s!

Exactly what I asked 3 days ago when the “fix” came out. I don’t see how these new categories won’t show on the site. And before I waste more time implementing their steps I have to be sure they will not show on my storefront.

Go daddy needs to add the google categories to the product edit page and hide that from customers. They will then show on the xml file.

I read it over and can’t figure out how these Google categories will not show on the storefront. The first three won’t because there are no products but as soon as you add products the 4th blamo it will show on the website after publish.

There is an area in the category manager for “active yes > no” but not mentioned in the walk through.?

@joshr, @steviet,

You would both need to be sure that the deepest category assigned to a product is the exact same path as the Taxonomy. This means it would only be necessary to redo your categories if your products are not already using the same path.

For Example: You want to list a product within “Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Pants > Jeans” (4 deep). Then you would need to create those exact categories; in that order, through your admin. You would then assign the product and make sure that no other categories (4 deep or more) are assigned to that same product. When you re-publish your site, this should work.

We are continuing to work on a more comprehensive solution in future updates to the Quick Shopping Cart. This solution was developed as a quicker work around that allowed Quick Shopping Cart users to get it to work in the interim.

Guess we still have to wait for an actual solution. You are asking your customers to change their entire store to match what Google offers as basic categories.

We don’t’ all sell “jeans”, and if we did I would have different categories of jeans; skinny, boot, ripped to shreds. All of which would not match Google taxonomy.

I tested this just to see if the categories would show on our website and it does. So in this case it is not really a fix as anyone could have set up their categories like this months ago. If you select “None” as the Primary Category as suggested in the GoDaddy instructions, the category then defaults to “Home” when you save it and then therefore shows up with all of your other categories on your home page. And I don’t want the Google categories to be seen at all by my customers – this should only be visible to Google.

@Boyzman,

As I mentioned previously, this solution was developed as a quicker work around that allowed Quick Shopping Cart users to get it to work with Google while our developers are continuing to work towards a more comprehensive solution.

Unfortunately, I do not have specific information on when such an update will be available. If new information is brought to my attention, as always we will post an update in regard to this to the Support Forums.

Thanks for your reply Christopher! It’s too bad that when we select “None” as the primary category that the shopping cart then defaults to “Home” as the primary category as shows the category on our store front. Maybe the developers could fix that and make the “None” category not visible on the store front, but visible to the Google product search. Sounds easy enough to me, but then again I am not a developer.

I am still being charged full price for a product that is not and has not been 100 percent for 5 months.

@Boyzman,

I know our developers are still discussing all options we have available for a more comprehensive solution that will meet everyone’s needs, including those who are not wanting to alter their Category trees. I will forward your feedback in this matter for them to take into advisement for their planning process.

Here is just a suggestion, why not add it as an attribute with a drop down list.

@joshr,

Thank you for taking a moment to share this suggestion. I will forward that along to be added to our developer’s considerations on this matter.

I’d like to add my voice to this matter. We can’t be expected to change the entire taxonomy of our storefront to match google’s categories. And if all these faux categories show up on the home page, then that will be extremely confusing to website users. I’d like to second the suggestion to create a drop-down. And if @joshr is reading this, could you point me in the direction of the easy workaround? Thanks!

@jana,

Thank you for your feedback. I know that our developers are actively working on a solution to this concern with the Google Taxanomy.

Unfortunately, I do not have specific details on how much longer it will be for an update to be released. But I can assure that it is coming. I will continue to keep tabs on this and get back to you if there is any new information.
