I have a website that is hosted somewhere else (small one guy operation). I just need to know what to ask him for so I can move the domain name to be hosted here.

Thanks all!

To change where your domain is hosted you will need to change the domain names nameservers at your current registrar.

The following help article will help you determine which nameservers to use.

no no no no….

@jeremyt: What article ?

@Esquivelia:

In jeremyt’s defence (sorta; this doesn’t include not showing us any article) your question does raise a few questions and considering some server maintenance going on at GD I think that maybe why nothing more got into his post…. (note; I am not an official source).

Ok, to your question:

A lot depends on what you want to do here. If you want to register the domain /name/ with GD you can simply buy a transfer and make sure that all the e-mail which is send to the accounts in the “domain information” is received by you.

If you mean that you want to move the website then you have several options at your disposal but a lot depends on the website.

For example; get a hosting account with GD, copy your website data over and then ask the other party to change the DNS servers.

If you need to know more then let me know…

Guess I’ll need to be keeping an eye out here for them GD boys :-)

@Esquivelia

The response from shelluser pretty much summed it up. It really depends on the type of website that you’re moving. Please respond with more information so we can help you get this website over to us. Also, I believe this is the article Jeremy tried to post:

To Move a Domain Name Out of Your Account
Log in to your Account Manager.
In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
Select the domain name(s) you want to move.
Click Account Change.
In New registrant’s Customer # or login name, enter the new owner’s account login information.
In New registrant’s email and Confirm email, enter the email address for the new owner.
In Domain’s contact information, select one of the following:
NOTE: The new owner’s Customer # or login name might be required or optional depending upon your choice here. When choosing Enter new details, it is optional. For all other choices, it is required. If entered, the value must match information on file in the receiving account.

Enter new details — Enter contact information for the new registrant.
Use details from specified customer account — Use contact information from the account you entered in the New registrant’s Customer # or login name field.
Do not change — Retain the contact information currently assigned to the domain name you are moving.
Select Keep the current name servers for this domain to retain the current nameservers for the domain name. If this is not selected, the domain name(s) are parked as they are activated in the new account.
NOTE: Any custom DNS for the domain name is lost when it moves to the new account.

Click Next.
If you selected Enter new details, complete the following, and then click Next:
Organization (Optional) — The organization with which the new registrant is affiliated, if any.
I certify that the specified organization… (Optional) — Indicates you agree that the organization will be the legal registrant.
First name and Last name — The new registrant’s first and last name.
Address 1 and 2 — The new registrant’s street address.
Country — The country in which the new registrant resides.
City, State, Postal Code — The registrant’s city, state, and ZIP code.
Phone — The registrant’s phone number.
Fax (Optional) — The registrant’s fax number.
NOTE: We display a list of the services that will be canceled once the domain is removed from your account. You cannot reverse a cancellation once you agree to the move.

Read the Domain Name Change Registrant Agreement, and, if you agree to the terms, select I have read and agree to the Domain Name Change…
When you change the Organization, or you change the First name or the Last name (in the absence of an Organization value), you must agree to a 60-day lockdown to continue.

If you want to transfer your domain name during the 60-day period, you should decline the Change of Registrant and transfer your domain name first. Otherwise, select I understand that, if I want to transfer this domain….
Click Finish.
