Remote access to or from database

I am trying to import/update our database hosted on the VDS, by running a PHP script from our shared hosting server.
It says “Can’t connect to MySQL server” from the web browser.
I saw one one of the Expert Hands Support service is “Enabling remote database access”. Is this what I need?

So I guess my question is, I know I cannot do remote access to the shared hosting database. But can I do remote access to VDS database?

Thanks,
Jason

You can setup remote access for databases on your VDS, but accessing those databases from your Shared Hosting plan won’t be possible. Our Shared plans have a restriction that prevents them from connecting to external databases (beside the ones created for the account of course).

Opposite of this, Shared Hosting plans actually do offer a way to setup remote access for databases, but only at the time of setup. If you had a database setup for remote access on your Shared plan, you would be able to access it from your VDS. If your database doesn’t allow remote access, you will need to export the database contents and manually import them into the new database on your VDS.

Hey DaveD,

Thanks for your reply.

I went ahead and tried to set up a new database for the shared hosting account, but there is no option to let me set up remote access.

Did you mean at the time of setting up my shared hosting account?

My idea is to insert data from the existing database to this newly created database, and then remote access the newly one from the VDS.

I think I need to call in for help to enable “Allow Direct Database Access” because the option is not available when I try to create a new database.

Do you think this is possible for them to add this function for us?

Regards,
Jason

Right, if you don’t have Direct Database Access as an option it means that your current hosting plan in a datacenter does not support it and will need to be migrated. Unfortunately, migration would require that you remove the databases on the account first, meaning you would have the get a backup of the content. As a result, it may still be easier just to export the content and then import it into the new database on your VDS. If you want to go through with the migration, you should put in a ticket with our Support team.

@ravindra

This option needs to be enabled during setup. You will need to recreate the database:
