The linux “which” command is not working on my shared hosting account. When I log in through SSH and try to use it at the command line I get the standard command not found error. Why would this command not work?

@BigBubba,

I always hate being the bearer of bad news, but the ‘Which’ command is disabled for security reasons when using SSH in our shared hosting environment.

Jason, just to be clear, you are a Godaddy support person that is giving me a factual answer?

Why on earth would the which command be disabled? What danger does it expose? I am not a linux expert but the which command seems like one of the most harmless linux commands in the world.

I am trying to use Gallery3 program on my shared hosting account and the Gallery3 program uses the “which convert” command to locate the path to ImageMagick.

@BigBubba,

I am indeed a member of Go Daddy support. I too thought you could use the command, so I reviewed it with our hosting experts. The fact that you can view server paths is a concern when you are not the only account on a shared hosting server.

When using ImageMagick, you will need the ‘convert path.’ Check out this article on using it with your account:

Hope this helps,

Jason
