It sounds like you are adding your own private hosts so you can host your own DNS server. When you set this up you would put in the IP address of the server where the DNS is going to be hosted. If you are not wanting to host your own DNS server then you can keep the domain set to our nameservers and simply update your domain’s A record so that it points to your server’s IP address. The following link has steps on managing a domain’s DNS.

i am setting a vds at godaddy, little has been posted about this that i can find after reading all day yesterday, including the support links given where you say”the IP address of the server where the DNS is going to be hosted”
is that the servers IPv4 address or the servers IPv4 DNS servers address?

When you setup a DNS service on your server you create the nameservers and define the IP addresses that will be associated with them. Those would be the IP addresses you will want to use when registering your hosts. If you can provide the type of control panel you are using with your server we will most likely have some help documentation we can provide to assist in setting up your own DNS service. Also, this is not required as you can keep the DNS hosted with us, and manage it through the DNS manager.

you will use the IP address of your server if you plan on managing the Zone File and DNS. If you are newer to this type of management, I would recommend managing the DNS via your Go Daddy account.
