New to godaddy and web dev. I would like to test my site before publishing it so was thinking I would create a subfolder for testing and password protect it. This way I could have friends/family check it before going live. Can I do this? If so how do I password protect a folder? Or is there a better way for this?

At this time I am just using bog standard html/css template so there is no database involved. I will be converting to joomla in the near future but want to get something up now

Thanks

@sdingle,

You should indeed be able to accomplish this. The steps to accomplish this would depend on the type of Hosting Account that you have. The following may help:

Hello Sherrod,

Thanks very much for your quick reply. The link was helpful until I realised it was for a linux hosting while I have windows hosting. Searching around found a artcile which basically says the only option is to remove read access which then prevents everyone from access except me. of course this mean I can’t have friends/family have a look unless I wasnt to give out my admin password. Ridiculous

Thanks again
Steve

@sdingle,

You are correct that the steps provided is only for Linux, the type of hosting was not specified the first time so I was unsure which your account was for.

While yes the option to remove the permissions to make the directory accessible only by the Primary FTP user is definitely one way of accomplishing this. You can accomplish this by scripting as well by creating a web.config file.

The following link should help with that:

Hope that helps,

Sherrod
