Wordpress Multisite Wildcard Subdomains

Looking to set up wordpress to run in multisite mode.
According to their documentation, I need to create a wildcard subdomain. It says to name it * (asterisk).
When I try create it in the domain management section of the hosting control center, I get an error message that says the * is an invalid character.
I have a deluxe windows grid hosting plan, and consider myself an intermediate novice to the hosting and webmastering. Any advice of what I can do to facilitate getting this up and running is appreciated.

I’m not too familiar with WordPress Multisites, however, I think you may be trying to use the “Subdomains” version, which our Hosting does not support. You can actually read the specific instructions on how to enable WordPress 3.0 Multisites on our hosting plans here:
If you would still like to create Wildcard DNS, you can do so by creating an A Record with the Host Name as * and then the IP Address in the ‘Points To’ field. However, this is not needed to run WordPress Multisites with us. Hope this information helps!

I am looking to create the “Subdomains” version of Wordpress Multisite and am currently in a Virtual Dedicated Environment. Does this hosting plan support wildcard sub domains?
Thanks in advance,

Yes, with a Virtual Dedicated server, you will be able to configure wildcard subdomains in the same fashion described by Clint.
