When I add a hit counter with the starting value of 1 and with the minumum number of zeros at 8, the counter that shows on the website has all the numbers shown in the Hit Counter Styles. How do I get my hit counter to start at 1?

Usually that has to do with the number being set at a certain amount when it was published and then being changed. If you go in and try publishing but choose ‘publish all’ it will publish the actual starting value of the hit counter. That should set it to whatever you have in your account, which it sounds like you set the starting value at 1.
