Getting an Authorization Code to Transfer Your Domain Name
NOTE: We've disabled .tc and .vg new registrations and transfers to us until further notice. We'll turn these services back on when we resolve our registry partner issues. Renewals and transfers away are unaffected.
Some domain name registries assign authorization codes (also known as EPP codes or transfer keys) to domain names when you register them. Authorization codes are unique and provide an extra level of security, safeguarding domain names from unauthorized transfers.
When you register a new domain name with us, we store your authorization code, if applicable. If your domain name requires an authorization code, you must use it to transfer the domain name to another registrar.
If you need an authorization code to transfer your domain name to us, see How do I get an authorization code to transfer my domain name to you?
Getting an Authorization Code via Email (Active Domain Name)
For most domain names, we can send authorization codes directly to the administrative contact's (admin) email address. If you have a .au domain name, we will send the authorization code to the registrant contact's email address as it displays in the Whois database. To update that email address, see Updating Your Domain Name Contact Information .
To Get an Authorization Code via Email (Active Domain Name)
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- Next to Domains, click Launch.
- Click the domain name.
- In the Domain Information section, for Authorization Code, click Send by Email.
- Click OK twice. We send the authorization code to the admin email address for the domain name.
Getting an Authorization Code via Email (Expired Domain Name)
If your domain name is expired but still in a recoverable status, we can send the authorization code to the administrative contact's (admin) email address for the domain name. If you have a .au domain name, we will send the authorization code to the registrant contact's email address as it displays in the Whois database. To update that email address, you must first recover the domain name. For more information, see Recovering Expired Domain Names and Updating Your Domain Name Contact Information.
To Get an Authorization Code via Email (Expired Domain Name)
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- Next to Domains, click Launch.
- From Domains, select Recover Expired Domains.
- Select the domain names to email authorization codes for, click Email Authorization, and then click OK. We send the authorization code to the admin email address for the domain name.
Getting an Authorization Code via Download
Some domain name registries require authorization codes for transfers, but we cannot send them via email. If this rare exception occurs, you can create and download a file that contains the authorization code.
To Get an Authorization Code via Download
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- Next to Domains, click Launch.
- From Tools, select Exportable Lists.
- Click Add New Export. The Generate Exportable List window displays.
- For Select list type, select All My Domains, and then click Next.
- For Select data to export, select Authorization Codes, and then click Next.
- Do the following, and then click Finish:
- Select file type — Select the type of file you want to export: CSV (Comma Separated Values) or XML (Extensible Markup Language).
- Select Compression — Select GZ to create the file in compressed format. Otherwise, select None.
- Name — Enter a name for the file.
- Click OK. We generate the file in batch mode, and we send you an email message when it is ready to download. See Downloading Exportable Lists in the Domain Manager for information.
