Locking and Unlocking Your Domain Names

Date Submitted: 1-24-2012

We automatically keep your domain names locked at the registry level to keep them secure. Locked domain names cannot be transferred to another registrar or account. When you make changes to a domain name's settings, such as updating nameservers or contact information, we automatically unlock and re-lock the domain name.

To transfer your domain name, you must manually unlock it. For more information, see Transferring Domain Names to Another Registrar. Allow up to 15 minutes for the change to complete.

To Lock or Unlock an Active Domain Name

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. Next to Domains, click Launch.
  3. Select the domain name(s) you want to modify.
  4. Click Locking.
  5. To lock the domain(s), select Lock domains.
To unlock the domain(s), deselect Lock domains.
  6. Click OK twice.

To Unlock an Expired Domain Name

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. Next to Domains, click Launch.
  3. From Domains, select Recover Expired Domains.
  4. Select the domain name you want to unlock.
  5. Click Locking.
  6. Clear Lock domains, and then click OK.

NOTE: For your security, we automatically lock domain names 30 days after unlocking.
