Why does my email account show that it is Pending Setup: MX Error?

Date Submitted: 9-30-2011

When setting up an email account, if the system cannot verify your email account is using the correct MX records, the status becomes Pending Setup: MX Error. If and when the MX records are corrected, the status becomes Active. If the Pending Setup: MX Error status remains, the MX records you specified in your hosting provider or domain name system manager, or the Cnames you've specified, may be incorrect. Your hosting provider is where your domain is hosted; your domain name system manager is a third-party domain manager where you might manage your domain settings, such as your DNS servers or MX records.

NOTE: The settings required for your domain will differ depending upon the type of email account you purchased.Click here for help finding your host names and MX record settings. If your host names include 'europe.', you have a European email account. If your host names include 'asia.', you have an Asia-Pacific email account.

Retry the MX validation or update your MX records to attempt to resolve the issue.

To Resubmit your MX Records for Validation

Click the Retry link next to the Pending Setup: MX Error status message.

To Change the MX Record

Verify that your MX settings match those found in your Email Control Center. Using an invalid email username prevents your MX records from setting up correctly.

Changing your CNAME Records

Log on to your hosting provider or third-party domain name system manager. Locate the CNAMEs and set the following:

  1. Set imap to the IMAP host name indicated in the Email Control Center.
  2. Set mail to the POP host name indicated in the Email Control Center.
  3. Set pop to the POP host name indicated in the Email Control Center.
  4. Set smtp to the SMTP host name indicated in the Email Control Center.
  5. Set email to one of the following:
    • Non-European or Non-Asia-Pacific accounts — email.secureserver.net
    • European accounts — email.europe.secureserver.net
    • Asia-Pacific accounts — email.asia.secureserver.net
  6. Set webmail to one of the following:
    • Non-European or Asia-Pacific accounts — email.secureserver.net
    • European accounts — email.europe.secureserver.net
    • Asia-Pacific accounts — email.asia.secureserver.net
