Why is my secure site not displaying the "padlock" icon in the browser's status bar?

Date Submitted: 9-6-2011

The padlock icon might not display in your browser's status bar, or you might receive errors that your site contains both secure and non-secure items, if all the elements in the page don't use HTTPS. These problems occur when any site element — an image, for example — loads from outside the secure (HTTPS) layer.

To resolve these problems, make sure that all images and other site elements are pulled from a secured location within your secure site. In other words, all images, and other URLs must start with HTTPS and not HTTP. Also, avoid embedding third-party objects in your site. If you must embed something from another website, make sure it is from a secure site.
